Apple has released iPhoto 1.1.1, an update to the photo organizing, sharing, editing application.

April 17, 2002:
Apple Releases OS X 10.1.4

Apple Security Update released for Mac OS X

Apple has released Security Update April 2002 1.0 via the Software Update Control Panel (in OS X) and on the Web. This release includes updated components that address security issues and provide increased security to prevent unauthorized access to applications, servers and the operating system. Apple releases iTunes 2.04
Apple's iTunes 2.0.4 adds expanded AppleScript support, and improved stability and performance to its freeware audio application. [Carbon]

DVD Player 3.1.1 released for OS X

Apple has released DVD Player 3.1.1, the latest version of its DVD playback software for Mac OS X.

March 1, 2002:
Apple DVD Player v3.1 for Mac OS X available

Apple has released DVD Player v3.1 via the Apple Software Update application in Mac OS X. The DVD software update adds features for DVD authoring, including the ability to select and play the contents of a 'VIDEO_TS' folder from a local volume as well as AppleScript support for selection and playback of DVD content and a 'wide' info window layout, bug fixes, and stability enhancements.

February 28, 2002:
Apple releases AirPort v2.0.2

Apple has released AirPort v2.0.2 for download via the Software Update control panel in Mac OS 9 and Software Update application in Mac OS X. This maintenance update adds support for Motorola Cybersurfer cable modems and increases AirPort network security in both Mac OS 9 and X. The software patch also improves compatibility with "graphite" AirPort base stations connected to PPPoE internet service providers.

February 25, 2002:
Apple releases Java update for Mac OS X

Apple has released Java 1.3.1 Update 1, an updated version of its java implementation for Mac OS X that adds improvements for text, mouse, and printing components, as well as improving overall stability and compatibility. The update is also available from the Mac OS X Software Update control panel.

February 19, 2002:
Mac OS X 10.1.3 Released

Apple has released Mac OS X 10.1.3 via the software update mechanism, which delivers enhancements that improve the reliability of Mac OS X applications, important security features and includes new and updated support for a variety of Digital Hub peripheral devices. Mac OS X 10.1.3 is also available as a stand-alone download. [16MB] Specific updates include:

  1. CD Disc Recording Peripherals: Expanded support for QPS, EZQuest, LaCie, Yamaha, MCE Technologies and Sony devices
  2. Image Capture and iPhoto: Improved support for several digital camera models from Canon, Kodak and Sony
  3. DVD Playback on external VGA displays on PowerBook G4 (Graphics/OpenGL)
  4. PowerBook video mirroring will be on by default when connecting to a new display (Graphics/OpenGL)
  5. Improvements for iTunes when the full screen visualizer is used (Graphics/OpenGL)
  6. Login authentication support for LDAP and Active Directory services (networking/improvements)
  7. OpenSSH version 3.0.2p1 (networking/improvements)
  8. WebDAV support for Digest authentication (networking/improvements)
  9. Mail includes support for SSL encryption (networking/improvements)

This update can be used to update from any version of Mac OS X 10.1 (Mac OS X 10.1, Mac OS X 10.1.1, or Mac OS X 10.1.2).
You must install Security Update 10-19-01 and Installer Update for Mac OS X 10.1 for Mac OS X 10.1 prior to installing this update.

Apple iPhoto improves digital photography

Apple today released iPhoto, its latest digital hub application designed for saving, organizing, editing, and sharing digital photos. Other features include a streamlined printing interface for maximizing the quality of prints, one-step publishing of online photo albums, and integrated one-click shopping for ordering prints or a professionally crafted photo album. iPhoto 1.0 is available as a free download in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish and requires Mac OS X 10.1.2 and a compatible camera, printer, or digital device

Mac OS X 10.1.2 Update Released
Apple has released OS X 10.1.2 via the Software Update control panel, which delivers improvements and new functionality, including updated and new USB and FireWire device support, including FireWire-based digital cameras; new PC Card storage device support, including media readers; IrDA modem support for FireWire-based PowerBook models; Audio, Display, and Speech improvements; Networking and Printing improvements as well as AirPort v2.0, Apache web server v1.3.22, and AppleScript v1.8 components. It is required for AppleScript Studio 1.0 to function.

Microsoft Internet Explorer Security Update available for OS X

Microsoft has released a security update for Internet Explorer 5.1 today. The update addresses an issue where Internet Explorer 5.1 automatically launches downloaded MacBinary and BinHex files, opening up the door to the system launching virus infected or other dangerous files. This update is available via the Software Update utility in Mac OS X's System Preferences.

Mac OS X 10.1 Available
Apple today officially announced that Mac OS X 10.1 will be available today. The upgrade will be available free of charge to Mac OS X users, and will be available on CD from Apple resellers. Customers can also order the upgrade from Apple for US$19.95 (covers shipping and handling). Apple also announced that more than 1,400 applications are now available for Mac OS X 10.1, and quietly announced the Mac OS X Server 10.1 update.

Apple's Mac OS X 10.1 update that is available for free from dealers and will not include the Mac OS X 10.1 Developer Tools CD, we have learned. The CD will only be available in the full Mac OS X 10.1 package and through Apple's Mac OS Update-To-Date program (the much-discussed "free" update that costs US$19.95 for shipping and handling). Furthermore, sources inform us that the Mac OS X 10.1 update (free retail or Mac OS Up-To-Date) will include the Mac OS 9.2.1 updater; the full copy of Mac OS X 10.1 will include the full version of Mac OS 9.2.1.

Mac OS X 10.0.4 released

Apple has released Mac OS X 10.0.4 (build 4Q12) via the Software Update preference panel. Two of the most significant and welcome changes with this release are detailed release notes (see Apple TIL #106360) and a standalone installer: Mac OS X 10.0.4 Combined Update. [13.9MB]

Installation notes

The update delivers all the enhancements included in previous updates if they were not installed already. The Read Me also contains this precaution:

    "You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means such as the Terminal. This precautionary statement does not apply to the normal installation of application software."

Here are some of the highlights on what has changed:

USB-Related Enhancements

  • PrintCenter compatibility with certain third-party USB inkjet printers has been improved.
  • Improves compatibility with many third-party USB devices including: "KVM" switchboxes, certain self-powered USB hubs, certain handheld devices that connect to a USB port, certain ADB-to-USB adapter devices, and third-party USB mouse and keyboard input devices.
  • Resolves a rare issue in which a USB device may not respond after the computer wakes from sleep.
  • Addresses issues that may have led to a USB mouse or keyboard input device becoming unresponsive unless it was disconnected and reconnected.
  • Addresses a potential kernel panic that may have occurred when disconnecting or hot swapping certain third-party USB devices.
  • Brings iTunes compatibility to additional third-party USB CD-RW drives, including: Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R1101 Combo Drive, Que Plextor PX-W1610A, MKE CD-RW CW8571B, Que Lite-On LTR-12101B, Iomega ZipCD 650, and Iomega Predator ZipCD 650.

Classic-Related Enhancements

  • Enhances the reliability of the Classic environment after the computer wakes from sleep.
  • Addresses a potential issue in the Classic environment in which the mouse pointer cursor may have become temporarily transparent.
  • Enriches reliability of certain Classic mail applications when used with certain types of mail servers.
  • Addresses a potential issue in the Classic environment with products that provide firewall services.
  • General improvements allow third-party hardware device drivers to perform better in the Classic environment; future OS X hardware device drivers can be developed to coexist with Classic device drivers for the same USB device.

Internet- and Networking-Related Enhancements

  • Addresses certain issues that may have occurred when copying files using Apple File Protocol (AFP), including: potential kernel panic when copying files, reliability on a VPN connection, and copying a file that has a long Japanese file name.
  • The advanced PPPoE option "Send PPP echo packets" now behaves as expected when disabled.
  • Addresses a potential issue where Internet Explorer 5.1 may have become temporarily unresponsive when viewing a QuickTime movie.
  • A later version of SSH is included.

Other Enhancements

  • Improves reliability when a large number of FireWire devices are disconnected and reconnected.
  • Addresses a potential issue in which a copied file's modification date may be inaccurate.
  • Resolves an issue in which the restart button does not appear after the installation of software that requires a restart.
  • A Brightness slider bar is now available when used with the Apple Studio Display 17.
  • Addresses a potential issue with certain PowerBook computers in which an undesirable sound may be heard while the computer is in sleep mode.
  • Enhances PowerBook battery power conservation when in sleep mode.
  • Improves responsiveness of application menus that are drawn with OpenGL.
  • Addresses a potential issue in which the startup hard disk volume could not be renamed after updating the version of Mac OS X.
  • Resolves a potential issue when printing from applications localized for German.
  • A later version of sudo is included.

Internet Explorer 5.1 Preview Release updated for OS X

Microsoft has released an updated version of Internet Explorer 5.1 for Mac OS X. IE 5.1 Preview shipped with Mac OS X, but many people found the browser lacking in many respects.

Microsoft informed MacCentral today the new browser Improves Reliability, offers better download support, contains user interface and Aqua improvements, offers better printing support and has updated support for Flash, Shockwave and QuickTime plug-ins.

" The improvements in Internet Explorer 5.1 Preview Release Update are in keeping with the Macintosh Business Unit's goal to provide customers with the best Mac OS X Carbon applications possible. This update is for the English, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish versions," said a Microsoft representative.

The new version will be available at Apple's Mac OS X Web site. You must be running Mac OS X 10.0.3 in order to use the update Internet Explorer 5.1 Preview.

Apple has posted iMovie for Mac OS X 2.1 and the OS X version of the iMovie Plug-in Pack.

Kensington has posted the final version of its MouseWorks 1.0 driver for Mac OS X, providing enhanced acceleration, scrolling support, and configurability for Kensington's current USB and ADB mice and trackballs.

Mac OS X update:
Apple has released the Mac OS X 10.0.2 update (Build 4P12) [15.3MB] as well as iTunes 1.1.1 for Mac OS X. Mac OS X 10.0.2 adds support for CD burning, a new version of ftpd and overall improved application stability. The new international version of iTunes requires Mac OS X 10.0.2 for CD burning and full screen visuals. Both updates are also available from the Software Update panel in Mac OS X.

Mac OS X update arrives
Late Friday Apple officially released the update that users of the newly released OS have been waiting for -- Mac OS X 10.0.1 is now available. [3.9MB]

By using the Software update in OS X's System Preferences you can download and install the update. According to notes on Apple's Mac OS X page the update contains many improvements including better support for 3rd party USB devices, Classic compatibility and overall application stability as well as support for the popular open source Secure Shell service. For Japanese users, an update to the Epson printer drivers is also available.
