Apple Debuts New Power Mac G4 Line
Revolutionary SuperDrive Now Available
for $1,000 Less

EXPO, NEW YORK–July 18, 2001–Offering the ultimate in
performance, expansion and digital media solutions, Apple®
today introduced a powerful new line of Power Mac G4s with 733 MHz,
867 MHz and dual 800 MHz PowerPC G4 processors. Apple’s revolutionary
SuperDrive™, a combination CD-RW/DVD-R drive that can burn
DVDs which can be played in consumer DVD players, is now standard
in Power Mac models costing $2,499–$1,000 less than before.
“These are the fastest Macs ever,
with 867 MHz and dual 800 MHz PowerPC G4 processors,” said
Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With the 867 MHz processor
and our revolutionary SuperDrive together in a system costing just
$2,499, more users can now afford to create professional quality
DVDs.”
The new Power Mac G4 line offers incredible performance
with systems featuring 867 MHz and dual 800 MHz PowerPC G4 processors
with Velocity Engine™. For the ultimate in processor utilization,
both the 867 MHz and dual 800 MHz processors include 256K of on-chip
level 2 cache running at processor speed and a large 2MB of level
3 backside cache per processor. For advanced graphics, NVIDIA GeForce2
MX graphics cards are now standard on all models, with the new NVIDIA
GeForce2 MX with TwinView card for dual monitor support standard
in the dual 800 MHz model. The dual 800 MHz Power Mac G4 runs professional
applications like Adobe’s Photoshop up to 83 percent faster
than a 1.7 GHz Pentium IV-based PC*.
The revolutionary SuperDrive, a combination CD-RW/DVD-R
drive, together with Apple’s pre-installed iDVD or optional
DVD Studio Pro™ software, can create professional-looking
DVDs that can be played in consumer DVD players. The SuperDrive
is now standard in Power Mac G4 models starting at just $2,499.
The SuperDrive writes DVD-R at 2x, reads DVD at 4x, writes CD-R
at 8x, writes CD-RW at 4x and reads CD at 24x.
Housed in a updated "quicksilver" enclosure,
the Power Mac G4 line includes:
• an award-winning design
with a side door that swings open to provide the industry’s
easiest access to expansion slots and memory;
• five slots, including four high-performance 64 bit 33 MHz
PCI slots and an 4x AGP slot with NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics card

Previews Next Version of Mac OS X
New Version 10.1 Features Blazing Speed
and Aqua Enhancements
MACWORLD EXPO, NEW YORK–July 18, 2001–At
the Macworld Expo Keynote, Apple® today previewed Mac®
OS X version 10.1, the first major upgrade to Apple’s new
UNIX-based operating system. Mac OS X v10.1 will deliver significant
performance improvements, new features and additional refinements
to the Aqua™ interface. Mac OS X v10.1 will be available this
September and will be supported by more than 1,000 third-party native
applications.
“This new version of Mac OS X is
really fast, and incorporates many suggestions from our users, such
as the moveable Dock that can be placed on the left, bottom or right
edge of the screen,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve
fixed a lot of bugs, and added a lot of great new features, like
burning CDs right from the Finder and the ability to seamlessly
network with Windows clients and servers.”
Mac OS X v10.1 delivers improved performance,
with dramatically faster application launch times, blindingly fast
menus and window resizing, faster logins and a more responsive feel
overall. In addition, Mac OS X v10.1 features an enhanced Aqua interface,
with a moveable Dock, which can be placed on the right, bottom or
left edge of the screen; Dock menus that enable running applications
to present a menu from their Dock icon providing fast access to
commonly performed functions; and new menu items for frequently
used system controls like battery, AirPort™, monitors and
sound.
Mac OS X v10.1 is the ultimate digital hub, with
the ability to create a music library and burn music CDs with iTunes,
burn data CDs from the Finder, make movies with iMovie™ 2,
watch DVDs with the DVD Player and create DVDs with iDVD.
Macworld attendees also had the opportunity to
see their favorite applications and third-party peripherals work
natively with Mac OS X v10.1. Top developers including Microsoft,
Adobe, Quark, FileMaker, IBM, Alias|Wavefront, Aspyr, Blizzard,
Connectix and WorldBook showed their support by demonstrating new
applications running on Mac OS X.
Throughout the operating system, Apple has ensured
that Mac OS X v10.1 fully leverages its UNIX-based design, significantly
increases performance and provides new features including:
• dramatically enhanced
system performance, especially application launch time and window
resizing;
• fine tuning of the Aqua interface for a more customizable
experience that includes the ability to position the Dock on the
left, the right or at the bottom of the screen;
• data CD burning capabilities within the Finder and DVD video
playback and authoring capabilities to support iDVD, making Mac
OS X the ultimate engine for the digital hub;
• broadened support for hundreds of third-party peripherals
such as printers, cameras, camcorders, MP3 players, rewriteable
drives and storage devices;
• unprecedented network integration with Mac®, Windows,
Linux and UNIX environments through AFP/AppleTalk®, SMB/CIFS,
WebDAV and NFS file services running on Mac OS X Server, AppleShare®,
UNIX, Linux, Windows NT and Windows 2000 servers;
• greatly enhanced 3D graphics performance with updated OpenGL
software and full support for NVIDIA GeForce3;
• a more powerful and efficient iDisk leveraging the Internet
standard WebDAV protocol to allow users to stay connected to their
iDisk, even behind corporate firewalls;
• substantial improvements to AppleScript® throughout
the system and full support for Internet scripting using SOAP and
XML; and
• the final version of Internet Explorer 5.1 with full support
for Mac OS X’s Java 2 runtime.

Mac OS X v10.1 will ship this September and will be available as
a full retail package through The
Apple Store®, at Apple’s retail stores and through
Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $129
(US). Mac OS X v10.1 will be available for current Mac OS X users
as an upgrade package through Apple’s Mac OS Up-to-Date program
for $19.95 (US).
Mac OS X requires a minimum of 128MB of memory
and is designed to run on the following Apple products: iMac™,
iBook™, Power Macintosh® G3, Power Mac™ G4, Power
Mac G4 Cube and any PowerBook introduced after May 1998.

today previewed iDVD 2 for Mac® OS X, bringing powerful motion
video menus to the world’s easiest to use application for
creating professional-looking DVDs that play in consumer DVD players.
Following just months after Apple’s stunning unveiling of
its SuperDrive™, a combination CD-RW/DVD-R drive, and iDVD
software in January, iDVD 2 cements Apple’s leadership position
in DVD authoring.
“In less than one hour, iDVD 2 users
can now create a custom DVD with super-cool menus that rival anything
coming out of Hollywood,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.
