Mac OS 9.1 arrives! What's new?
Mac OS 9.1 arrives Mac OS 9.1 is now available as a free multi-part download. You can try to access it from this link.

Previous problems with the link not working, or being unable to get through, have been resolved. Apple requests that you start by going to this page. From here, click the Download Mac OS 9.1 button and you will eventually be taken to the page from which you can initiate the download. All of the 15 file segments now are served by Akamai, rather than Apple's ftp site. Readers reports that download speeds are now quite fast.

The complete download requires 15 parts for a total of over 70MB. A 71MB single part download is also available (preferable for those with cable/DSL modems or equally fast connections).

Finally, if you have any version of Mac OS 9, you can upgrade to Mac OS 9.1 using the full install CD for $19.95. Or you can purchase the "full" version of Mac OS 9.1 from the Apple Store for $99. [Go to this page for info.]

Several readers have informed us that the Mac OS 9.1 CD, that they ordered from Apple when the Update was first released, has now arrived.

Mac OS 9.1 also adds full support for all the keys on the Apple Pro keyboard when used with pre Summer-2000 Macs.

Mac OS 9.1 Tips and information

Mac OS 9.1 Update is designed to support today's Mac OS 9 customers and ease the transition for tomorrow's Mac OS X customers. The Mac OS 9.1 update delivers additional support for Multiple Users and iTools services, and Sherlock 2 has a new channel Entertainment, making it easy to find movie reviews or your favorite song.

The Mac OS X Public Beta and Mac OS 9.1 are not compatible. If you install Mac OS 9.1, the Classic environment in the Mac OS X Public Beta will no longer function.

If you use a Language Kit, the full install CD is required to upgrade your language kit at the same time as you are upgrading to Mac OS 9.1.

The following Macs must order the update CD to install 9.1: PowerMac series :6100, 7100, 8100, 8115 and WorkGroup Servers 6150, 8150, 9150.

Downloadable Update Versus Mac OS 9.1 Disc

The downloadable Mac OS 9.1 Update contains fewer updates and extras than the Mac OS 9.1 CD-ROM disc. This reduces the amount of data that must be downloaded at once.

The downloadable update contains core system software updates, Apple Remote Access (ARA) Client Server 4.0, and QuickTime 4.1.3. The Mac OS 9.1 download may only be used to update a computer that has Mac OS 9.0.x installed.
It is available at Apple Software Updates (http://www.apple.com/swupdates/).

Note: If you use Apple language kits, the disc is required to update to Mac OS 9.1.
Mac OS 9.1 Disc

The Mac OS 9.1 disc includes additional updates to Mac OS that are not a part of the downloadable Mac OS 9.1 Update. Some of these additional items are available separately at Apple Software Updates or from third-party Web sites (non-Apple software). The disc may be used for full installation or clean installation. If you already use Mac OS 9, you may qualify to purchase a Mac OS 9.1 disc at reduced cost. To get details, visit the Software section at http://www.apple.com/. Be sure to choose your geographic region from the pop-up menu on the front page at http://www.apple.com/.

Mac OS 9.1 and DVD Player 2.2
Regarding the incombatibility of DVD Player 2.2 and 9.1, after much heartache and tearing out of hair I restored my software (OS 9 cd, saving old items) and updated to 9.0.4, then installed DVD Player 2.2, and then updated again to 9.1.

Comparing the Extensions in the new install to those in my saved items folder, I found that most of the ATI drivers were different. It seems that when I installed 9.1 originally the drivers weren't replaced. Don't ask me...

I copied all the new drivers into my old Extensions folder, moved everything back how it was, presto, worked like a charm.

The Extensions I had to replace were:
ATI 3D Accelerator 4.9.3
ATI Graphics Accelerator 4.7.3
ATI Rage 128 3D Accelerator 5.6.9
ATI Resource Manager 2.1.5
ATI Video Accelerator 4.3.3

In short, if you can't run DVD Player 2.2 under OS 9.1, do a Get Info on the above Extensions. If the version numbers match those above, you gotta replace them with the ones specific to OS 9.1. You can tell the new ones by OS Z - 9.1 at the top of the Get Info box.

Try re-installing 9.1, but don't count your chickens, she's a capricious creature who only seems to install the smallest amount she can get away with. I sometimes wonder what it is I pay her for.

Epson USB printing and 9.x
If you are having the trouble with Epson printing might want to try this advice: When using Mac OS 9.0 or later, the following extensions should be removed from the Macintosh active extensions folder:

-Epson USBPrintClass 1
-Epson USBPrintClass 2
-Epson USBPrintClass 3
-Epson USBPrintClass A

Mac OS 9.1: Downloadable Update Versus Mac OS 9.1 Disc TIL: Article #106101 notes: "The downloadable Mac OS 9.1 Update contains fewer updates and extras than the Mac OS 9.1 CD-ROM disc." The article lists what all the differences are.
