What's New In Mac OS 9.2.1 and
Mac OS 9.1 Updater Installation & Tips:
Apple released Mac OS 9.2.1
through the Internet on
August 21. There is a direct
link for downloading the update that worked very well on a DSL
connection. The file is an 82 MB download. What's new in the update?
The biggest thing is speed. Mac OS 9.2.1 has a
significantly faster startup time, and general use appears much
faster. In addition as some enhancements for multiple-users, and
the ability to access one's iDisk from an open & save dialog
box. Another big new item is the inclusion of a new "Windows"
pulldown menu in the Classic Mac menubar. That comes with cool new
shortcuts, and we have those new shortcuts for you below.
The following are the list of changes under "What's
New In 9.2.1" in the "Late Breaking News" document
included with the installation and painstakingly copied by hand
for your edification:
Streamlined folder structure
The folder structure in Mac OS 9.2 makes it easier to find all
your files and applications. Here are some changes you'll notice.
- The Applications folder is named "Applications
(Mac OS 9)."
- The Apple Extras and Utilities folders are
in the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder.
- Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer
are in the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder.
Browse your hard disk to get familiar with your
new Mac OS, and use Sherlock to locate all your files and folders.
Sharing your USB printer
Macintosh users who are on the same network can share their USB
printers. The new control panel lets you set up a shared printer
on your desktop so that it's as easy to use as any desktop printer.
Easy navigation in the Finder
Manipulate open windows in the Finder with the new Window menu in
the menu bar and a few simple key combinations.
Window menu shortcuts
You can use the Window menu to move easily between open Finder windows.
To make a window active, choose its name from the menu. A plus sign
(+) means keys are held down together.
Press these keys while you choose an item from
the Window menu
- Command - Close window
- Command + shift - Put away pop-up window
- Command + option - Expand selection
and close other windows
- Control - Expand selection and minimize
other windows
- Control + option - Make selection active
and expand all open windows
Multiple User support for General Preferences
The new General Controls panel lets each person who uses your computer
set his or her own preferences for things like cursor blinking,
speech, and the default folder for saving documents.
Instant access to your iDisk
Now you can save files directly to and from your iDisk on the Internet
to make it easier to share files between computers. Choose Connect
to iDisk from the Shortcuts button of the Open or Save dialog box.
To sign up for your iDisk with your iTools account,
go to www.apple.com/itools.
Mac OS 9.1 Updater Installation & Tips:
The long anticipated Mac OS 9.2.1 updater to Mac
OS 9.1 and 9.2 was released by Apple. It is not a full install.
This means that you need 9.1 or 9.2 (summer 2001 Macs) installed
before running the 9.2.1 updater. The ReadMe states that it only
works with Macs that are supported on Mac OS X (Beige Power Mac
G3's and later, iMacs, iBooks, PowerBook G3 Series and later).
We downloaded the single file of the updater because
we fortunately have broadband internet via DSL. We had no trouble
getting the updater and the download rates ranged from 56k/sec to
82k/sec. All downloads gave a "Shrinkwrap Error -60" message
as they decoded but we just dismissed it with no apparent effect.
We installed Mac OS 9.2.1 updater on a PowerBook
G3 and Power Mac G4 733. We've updated Mac OS 9.1 alone on partitions
or disks and Mac OS 9.1 on partitions with Mac OS X 10.0.4. All
work fine after installation.
Virtually every 9.1 control panel and extension
was updated. The exceptions were AirPort, Apple DVD Player software
and MacOS RunTime for Java (MRJ). Apple Remote Access 4.0.2 and
ColorSync 3.0.4 are also installed.
[Tip: If you first need to clean
install 9.1 (like you somehow have one of the late 9.2 betas installed)
and have a DVD-ROM drive be sure to update the extensions to v2.7
after clean installing 9.1 and before installing the updater. If
you try afterwards, the DVD software installer will not work.]
There are, of course, new ATI and NVIDIA graphics
drivers. The NVIDIA version is 2.3, up from 2.1.1. The new NVIDIA
drivers dramatically improve the visual quality of Unreal Tournament
on our GeForce3. UT runs on RAVE rather than OpenGL (updated to
v1.2.2 with OpenGLRendererATI at v1.2.5), although there is an older
OpenGL version of UT, and the visual quality of RAVE has been less
than spectacular. That changes with the new NVIDIA drivers, at least
on our GeForce3 graphics card. If you have this card, the 9.2.1
updater is worth getting for the NVIDIA drivers alone.
The only downside that we've heard so far is that
Dana's DiskWarrior extension doesn't work but Alsoft usually updates
the extension soon after each Mac OS update.
